How to edit images with AI

AI Edit lets you modify product photos by describing what you want in plain English. Instead of learning complex editing software, you simply type something like “remove the shadow” or “make the background brighter” and the AI applies the change for you.

This is ideal for quick touch-ups, color corrections, and minor adjustments to your e-commerce images without leaving PixelFiddler.

Open your media library and click on a single image you want to edit. AI Edit works on one file at a time, so make sure only one image is selected.

With your image selected, click AI Edit in the toolbar or right-click the image and choose AI Edit from the context menu.

The AI Edit dialog will open, showing a preview of your image alongside the editing controls.

In the Prompt field, describe the change you want to make. You can use up to 1000 characters. Write in plain, natural language — there is no special syntax to learn.

Choose your preferred model and strength (explained in detail below), then review the estimated token cost displayed in the dialog.

Click Apply to start processing. The AI will generate the edited version, which may take a few seconds depending on the image size. Once finished, review the result before deciding whether to keep it.

The prompt is the most important part of AI editing. A well-written prompt produces better results with fewer attempts. Here are some examples of effective prompts:

  • “Remove the shadow under the product”
  • “Make the background brighter”
  • “Change the wall color to blue”
  • “Add a soft shadow under the product”
  • “Remove the wrinkles from the fabric”
  • “Make the lighting warmer and more even”
  • “Clean up the background and make it pure white”

The Strength slider controls how aggressively the AI applies your requested changes. It ranges from 0.0 (minimal change) to 1.0 (maximum change).

Strength rangeEffectBest for
Low (~0.3)Subtle, gentle adjustmentsFine-tuning colors, slight brightness corrections
Medium (~0.5-0.7)Balanced changesMost common edits like shadow removal, color shifts
High (~0.9-1.0)Dramatic, bold transformationsMajor color changes, significant background alterations

You can choose between two AI models depending on the type of edit you need:

QUALITY — the default model. It produces more accurate, predictable results that closely follow your prompt. Best for precise edits like color corrections, shadow removal, and background cleanup. Choose this when your product photos need to look professional and true-to-life.

CREATIVE — produces more artistic and experimental results. The AI takes more creative liberty when interpreting your prompt. Best for generating unique visual effects or stylistic changes where you want the AI to surprise you.

After the AI finishes processing your image, you have two choices for saving:

  • Overwrite original — replaces your current file with the edited version. If versioning is enabled on your storage, the original version is archived and can be restored later.
  • Save as copy — saves the edited image as a new file with an “-edited” suffix added to the filename. For example, product-photo.jpg becomes product-photo-edited.jpg.

Every AI edit consumes tokens from your account balance. The cost is calculated based on the megapixel count of your image — larger images cost more to process.

The estimated token cost is displayed in the AI Edit dialog before you start processing, so you always know what an edit will cost before committing to it. There are no surprise charges.

You can review the full pricing details for each model on the AI pricing page in your space settings.

  • Single file only — AI Edit works on one image at a time. You cannot select multiple files and edit them all at once through the dialog.
  • Not a batch operation — if you need to apply the same AI edit to many images automatically, use a workflow with an AI Edit stage instead.
  • Best for touch-ups — AI editing works best for adjustments and corrections, not for completely redesigning an image from scratch. For generating entirely new images, use the image generation feature.
  1. Be specific in your prompts. “Remove the shadow on the left side of the product” works better than just “fix the image.”

  2. Start with lower strength and increase gradually. You can always re-run the edit with a higher strength, but you cannot undo over-processing without starting over.

  3. Use QUALITY model for product photos. It produces cleaner, more predictable results that keep your products looking professional.

  4. Review results before overwriting. Always compare the edited version to the original. Sometimes a second attempt with a refined prompt yields better results.

  5. Keep prompts under a few sentences. While you have up to 1000 characters, shorter and more focused prompts tend to produce better results than long, detailed descriptions.

  6. Work with well-lit source images. The AI produces better results when it has a clear, high-quality original to work from.
