How to remove image backgrounds
Product photos sell better when the background is clean and consistent. PixelFiddler uses AI to strip the background from any image in seconds, giving you a transparent cutout or a solid-color backdrop ready for your store listings, catalogs, and marketing materials.

What background removal does
Section titled “What background removal does”Background removal analyzes your image, detects the main subject (your product), and separates it from everything behind it. The result is a clean cutout that you can place on any background you like.
This works especially well for:
- Clothing, shoes, and accessories on mannequins or hangers
- Electronics and gadgets photographed on desks or tables
- Jewelry, cosmetics, and small items shot on colored surfaces
- Food and beverage products with busy backgrounds
Three ways to remove backgrounds
Section titled “Three ways to remove backgrounds”You can remove backgrounds from a single image, process an entire batch at once, or set up an automated workflow that handles new uploads for you.
1. Single file
Section titled “1. Single file”- Open your Media Library and navigate to the image you want to edit.
- Click on the image to select it.
- In the toolbar that appears, click Remove Background. You can also right-click the image and choose Remove Background from the context menu.
- Configure the options in the Remove Background dialog (see below).
- Click Process to start.

2. Batch processing
Section titled “2. Batch processing”Need to remove backgrounds from dozens or hundreds of images at once? Select them all and process them in one go.
- In your Media Library, select multiple images using checkbox selection or Shift+click.
- Click Remove Background in the batch toolbar.
- Choose your background and save options in the dialog. These settings apply to every selected image.
- Click Process to start the batch.
3. In workflows (automated)
Section titled “3. In workflows (automated)”If you regularly upload product photos that always need their backgrounds removed, you can automate the process entirely.
Add a Background Removal node to any workflow. Every time a new image is uploaded that matches your trigger rules, the background is removed automatically without any manual steps.
Remove Background dialog options
Section titled “Remove Background dialog options”When you click Remove Background, a dialog opens where you configure how the output should look and how it should be saved.
Background type
Section titled “Background type”Choose what replaces the original background after it is removed.
Transparent background (default) The background is completely removed, leaving a transparent area behind your product. The output is saved as a PNG file to preserve transparency. This is ideal when you plan to composite the product onto other backgrounds later, such as lifestyle scenes or promotional banners.
Solid color background Instead of transparency, you can fill the background with any color you choose. Use the color picker to select a color, or pick one from your recent colors history. The file keeps its original format when you use a solid color.
Save options
Section titled “Save options”You have two choices for how the processed image is stored.
Overwrite original The processed image replaces the original file. Use this when you no longer need the original background version.
Save as copy
The processed image is saved as a new file alongside the original. The new file uses the original name with a -nobg suffix. For example, red-sneaker.jpg becomes red-sneaker-nobg.png.
AI model selection
Section titled “AI model selection”PixelFiddler offers two AI model tiers for background removal. You can choose which one to use each time you process images.
| Model | Speed | Quality | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BASIC | Faster | Standard | Large batches, simple backgrounds, quick turnarounds |
| QUALITY | Slower | Higher detail | Complex edges (hair, fur, lace), professional listings |
BASIC works well for most product photography, especially items with clean, defined edges like boxes, bottles, and electronics. Choose QUALITY when you need the AI to handle tricky details such as wispy hair on a model, intricate lace patterns, or semi-transparent materials like glass.
Token cost
Section titled “Token cost”Background removal is a paid AI operation that consumes tokens from your subscription. Before processing begins, the dialog shows you the estimated token cost based on the size of each image (measured in megapixels) and the model you selected.
- Larger images cost more tokens than smaller ones.
- The QUALITY model costs more tokens per image than BASIC.
Review the token estimate in the dialog before clicking Process to avoid surprises.
Processing status
Section titled “Processing status”After you start processing, each image shows a processing indicator on its file card in the media library. You can continue working with other files while the AI runs in the background.
Once processing finishes, the indicator changes to reflect the result:
- Processed — the background was successfully removed.
- Failed — something went wrong. Hover over the status to see the error details, then try again.

Practical examples for e-commerce
Section titled “Practical examples for e-commerce”White background for Amazon and eBay
