AI models and pricing
PixelFiddler uses AI to power features like background removal, image editing, and image generation. Every AI operation consumes tokens from your subscription plan. The number of tokens used depends on which AI model you choose and the size of your image.
This page explains how AI models and token pricing work so you can get the best results while staying within your budget.
How token-based pricing works
Section titled “How token-based pricing works”Your subscription plan includes a monthly token allowance. Each time you run an AI operation — such as removing a background or editing an image — a specific number of tokens is deducted from your balance.
The token cost for any operation depends on two things:
- The AI model you select (BASIC, QUALITY, or CREATIVE)
- The image size in megapixels (for operations that use per-megapixel pricing)
AI model tiers
Section titled “AI model tiers”PixelFiddler offers three AI model tiers. Each tier represents a different balance between speed, cost, and output quality.
| Feature | BASIC | QUALITY | CREATIVE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processing speed | Fastest | Moderate | Moderate |
| Token cost | Lowest | Higher | Higher |
| Output quality | Good for standard tasks | Best for important images | Artistic and experimental |
| Best for | Bulk processing, everyday tasks | Hero images, key listings | Creative edits, unique styles |
The BASIC model processes images quickly and uses the fewest tokens per operation. It delivers solid results for standard tasks where speed and efficiency matter more than pixel-perfect output. Choose BASIC when you are processing large batches of images or working with images that do not need premium quality.
QUALITY
Section titled “QUALITY”The QUALITY model produces noticeably better results and is the default for AI editing operations. It costs more tokens per operation but delivers higher fidelity output. Use QUALITY for your hero product photos, featured listings, and any image that your customers will see up close.
CREATIVE
Section titled “CREATIVE”The CREATIVE model is designed for artistic and experimental results. It interprets prompts more freely and can produce unique, eye-catching edits. This model is available for AI editing operations and is ideal when you want to push beyond standard product photography.
Which operations support which models
Section titled “Which operations support which models”Not every AI feature supports all three model tiers. The table below shows which models are available for each operation.
| Operation | BASIC | QUALITY | CREATIVE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Background removal | Yes | Yes | — |
| AI editing | — | Yes | Yes |
| Image generation | Yes | Yes | — |
| Auto-tagging | Standard (no model choice) | — | — |
Understanding token costs
Section titled “Understanding token costs”AI operations use one of two pricing models depending on the operation type.
Per-megapixel pricing
Section titled “Per-megapixel pricing”Operations like AI editing charge tokens based on the image size in megapixels. A larger image costs more tokens to process than a smaller one.
For example, editing a 12-megapixel product photo costs more tokens than editing a 2-megapixel thumbnail. The exact rate depends on the model tier you choose, with BASIC being the most affordable and QUALITY or CREATIVE costing more per megapixel.
Flat pricing
Section titled “Flat pricing”Some operations, like background removal and image generation, charge a fixed number of tokens regardless of image size. The flat cost still varies by model tier — QUALITY costs more than BASIC for the same operation.
Cost factors at a glance
Section titled “Cost factors at a glance”Several factors influence how many tokens an AI operation consumes:
- Model tier — BASIC costs the least, QUALITY and CREATIVE cost more
- Image size — Larger images (more megapixels) cost more for per-megapixel operations
- Number of files — Batch operations multiply the per-file cost by the number of selected files
- Operation type — Different AI features have different base rates

Setting your default AI model
Section titled “Setting your default AI model”You can set a default AI model for each operation type in your space settings. This saves time by pre-selecting your preferred model whenever you run an AI operation.
- Open your Space settings
- Navigate to the AI models section
- Choose your preferred default model for each operation type (background removal, AI editing, image generation)
- Save your changes
Your defaults apply across all storages in the space. You can always override the default on a per-operation basis when needed.

Cost optimization tips
Section titled “Cost optimization tips”Getting great results while keeping token costs manageable is easy with a few simple strategies.
Use BASIC for bulk operations
Section titled “Use BASIC for bulk operations”When processing dozens or hundreds of images at once, select the BASIC model. The savings add up quickly across large batches, and the quality difference is minimal for standard tasks like background removal.
Reserve QUALITY for hero images
Section titled “Reserve QUALITY for hero images”Save the QUALITY model for your most important product photos — the main listing image, featured banners, or images used in advertising. These are the images where higher quality directly impacts sales.
Process at smaller sizes to save tokens
Section titled “Process at smaller sizes to save tokens”For per-megapixel operations like AI editing, processing a smaller image costs fewer tokens. If you only need a thumbnail or a web-sized version, resize your image first and then apply the AI operation. There is no need to process a full-resolution photo if the output will only be displayed at 800 pixels wide.
Review your token usage regularly
Section titled “Review your token usage regularly”Check your token usage in the Usage section of your account dashboard. This helps you understand your spending patterns and adjust your model choices or subscription plan accordingly.
Understanding your token balance
Section titled “Understanding your token balance”Your token balance and usage information is available in your account dashboard under Usage. Here you can see:
- Current token balance — How many tokens remain in your current billing period
- Usage history — A month-by-month breakdown of token consumption
- Usage prediction — An estimate of your projected usage for the current period based on your recent activity
If you consistently approach your token limit, consider upgrading to a higher subscription tier for a larger monthly allowance and a lower cost per token.
